Collaboration, Flexibility and Partnership at the ‘Scentre’ of Success

The client

Scentre Group owns and operates the pre-eminent living centre portfolio in Australia and New Zealand with retail real estate assets and shopping centre ownership interests including 41 Westfield shopping centres.

The situation

Scentre Group is working on a $790 million redevelopment of their shopping centre, Westfield Newmarket, to create a world-class retail and lifestyle destination in the heart of Auckland. The project incorporates four sites over four-and-a-half hectares and will house more than 230 new speciality stores. On completion, it will be the largest retail complex in Newmarket, catering to almost 555,000 residents.

BVT has been brought on board to work with Scentre Group and its Australian-based construction team on the interior engineering for the major communal spaces within the centre such as the Mall, Food Halls, dining and entertainment precincts and corridors.

Our solution

We are taking a partnership approach with Scentre Group and its Australian-based construction team who are not familiar with the seismic requirements of building in New Zealand. We understand that building in New Zealand can be daunting when you’ve built predominantly in countries that do not have to comply with our stringent seismic building codes. By working alongside all parties, we ensure that everyone feels well supported through the construction process, which leads to the safest, most seamless outcome.

With a dedicated engineer onsite, and an engineering team providing support from the office, we are well positioned to provide engineering solutions quickly and flexibly to situations and changes that crop up daily.

The result

This is a large, detailed and ongoing project and we will continue to work flexibly, in partnership, with all parties towards Westfield Newmarket’s impending opening in the fourth quarter of 2019.
